Holistic therapies are used by many to improve the all-round
wellbeing of the whole person, looking at both the physical
symptoms and emotional state. Therapists believe that
this is the natural way to work with the mind, body and
soul. As a continuation of this ethos, many use organic
therapy products in their treatments, such as essential
oils from organically grown plants. Here, Lauren
Lathbury, a crystal therapist and reiki practitioner,
gives her own insight into how complementary therapists
can contribute to organic living. |
Lauren’s View:
“Holistic therapists look at and treat the whole person.
Whereas conventional medicine has its main focus on treating
the symptoms of an illness, an holistic therapist will try to
gain insight into the physical, emotional, mental & spiritual
state of the client and thereby build a picture of why the illness
has manifested. If you are interested in visiting an holistic
therapist be prepared to discuss more than just your physical
symptoms!
I tend to explain that our body can be likened to a huge orchestra.
When everyone is playing well the sound is harmonious, good
health prevails; however it only takes one player to go out
of key for others to be affected and lose their concentration.
As the orchestra continues to play the tune becomes more and
more lost until there is disharmony, or ill health. The holistic
therapist acts a bit like a conductor trying to bring back the
missing harmony to the body, mind and spirit.”
Natural Living
“Many holistic therapists will be conscious of the way
they lead their own lives. They become more aware of the natural
environment, the quality of food in their diet, the products
they use to clean their house and the impact of the products
they buy on poorer nations. I have found that once my Crystal
Therapy students have understood that every choice is meaningful
and has a consequence, many progress towards a predominately
organic diet, buy fair-traded products, garden organically and
choose environmentally friendly cleaning products. Such conscious
choices help to bring the healer’s own life into balance,
which is an important factor in delivering healing to others.
Within my own healing practice I have a focus on the use of
energies from nature. My crystals link me into the power of
the mineral kingdom and my tree and flower essences into the
plant kingdom. The crystals are thankfully infinitely reusable-
they’ll outlast you and me! They are a pleasure to work
with, and I notice that more and more people are being drawn
towards crystal energies at this time.”
Essences
“When I make my own essences I use waters collected from
natural springs and waterfalls. I am currently utilising water
from Water-Break-its-Neck near Llanfihangel-Nant-Melan and from
the Chalice Well in Glastonbury. The plant materials are gathered
in a responsible manner from the wild and from my garden, which
is managed organically; it is not necessary to destroy any plant
in order to make an essence. I believe that by working in this
way I am working hand in hand with nature.
If anyone is wondering about whether the energy therapies I
practice can help I suggest booking a session and coming along
with an open mind. Most people notice the sensation of energy
moving in their bodies and feel very relaxed. Many also see
beautiful colours. I never put pressure on anyone to rebook,
nor should any therapist, but most of my clients do, because
they notice some benefit from the initial consultation.”
