Why eat organic food?

Categories: Food & Drink

It is often said to taste better, as the animals are reared on natural diets and crops have a lower water content. It is better for your health as it is fresher, contains less chemical residues and often contains more vitamins and minerals. It is better for the soil and for animal welfare. It is better for wildlife as organic farms encourage a greater diversity. It guarantees that your food does not contain any genetically modified materials.

The term ‘organic’ is legally defined by the EU. Food labelled as organic has to conform to standards of production and processing set by recognised certification bodies such as The Soil Association or Demeter. Organic farmers are inspected every year to ensure they keep to these standards.

Buying organic food from a local producer reconnects you to the land and seasons, as well as supporting the Welsh organic economy. It is also better for the environment as less transportation and packaging means less pollution and waste.

The links below will take you to directory pages of companies which produce those particular categories of food and drink. For example, clicking on Meat, Poultry and Fish will hep you find Welsh Mountain lamb for your Sunday roast or next year’s Christmas turkey.
